It seems that the live bunker fishing has really slowed up in the back bay, but fear not the fly and light tackle fishing has really picked up. We've been finding stripers in the ocean sipping rain bait at first light before the boat traffic and blues arrive. Fish have been all sizes from 5 to 25 lbs. Tom Mustari nailed a nice 25 pounder on a white bucktail and porkrind combo. The fish are also holding on the prime real estate in the bay. Bob Guskin and son Luke had fish to 12 pounds on bucktails and flies. Also Dr. Ray out of Brooklyn in 3 casts took a 15 pound striper, 12 pound bluefish, and a 5 1/2 pound fluke on a bucktail. Other highlights were Guy Davies and Susannah Sullivan of Holland and Holland Gun Company had all the stripers they could handle on chartreuse and white clousers.
Let's not forget the fantastic topwater bluefish action we've been having along the beaches. We've been taking blues to 12 lbs. right up in the wash on topwater poppers. After catching a few of these brutes Dr. Mike McKlean of Texas surrendered and wanted to go back to catching some smaller bass on a fly.
Till next time
